Duties: 

Under the direction of the Head of the Science & Technology Library, the Physical Sciences Librarian oversees collection development and delivers critical research support to STEM colleges and departments, including the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, and Geology. The librarian develops library content for the curriculum in these colleges and departments, with a focus on course-integrated, problem/project based information literacy instruction to achieve student mastery of resources and sophisticated search techniques. The Physical Sciences Librarian provides reference service at the Science & Technology Library.

Requirements: 

The University of Akron seeks a motivated, collegial library professional for the position of Physical Sciences Librarian, a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Bibliography. The successful candidate must have the following: a MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited school; excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to work well with others and to provide leadership within the diverse settings of a complex university organization; a strong service ethic; and a demonstrated appreciation for and effectiveness with a diverse student body. The successful candidate will be required to meet the University of Akron Libraries’ criteria for promotion and tenure, which include research, teaching, participation on library and university committees, and service in professional organizations.

Required Qualifications
* Educational background in the physical sciences, or professional experience in an academic library or special library working with physical science disciplines
* Expertise in electronic access to data and Web-based information services
* Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering or a chemically related field or an advanced degree in one of the physical sciences
* Broad knowledge of the science disciplines
* Knowledge of the literature of science and technology including technical reports and conference proceedings
* Demonstrated ability in the use of the specialized chemistry databases
* Experience creating and maintaining Web pages
* Reference and/or instruction experience

SALARY, BENEFITS AND APPLICATION
All faculty positions are 12 month-tenure track appointments. Minimum salary: $55,000. Included is a generous standard benefits package with 22 days vacation and support for professional development. A collective bargaining agreement is in place, with faculty represented by the Akron-AAUP.
