The Early Literacy Station™ (ELS)

Alternative Work Environments, Inc. (AWE) has announced the release of Version 4.0 of the Early Literacy Station™. All shipments of the Early Literacy Station™ Version 3.0 have been replaced with Version 4.0 starting the week of June 4, 2007.

Along with the release of Version 4.0 comes a 25% increase in the number of educational software titles that are pre-loaded on the station. This now gives you 34 educational titles instead of the 26 previously included with the system.

You will also notice there has been a modest price increase instituted by AWE for the Early Literacy Station™. This is the first price increase for the ELS in more than two years. OHIONET offers a better discount to our members than the educational discount price AWE offers to qualifying libraries, day care centers and schools. Your negotiated price is reflected on the order forms which can be found on our website by following the links below. AWE is also offering the Early Literacy Station Bilingual Spanish™ unit at discounted prices. This pricing is also listed on the OHIONET order form.

Odyssey Requires Twain-Compatible Scanners
Contact OHIONET for Purchase Options!

In support of the OhioLINK ICS Committee initiative to implement Odyssey as a common platform for document delivery among OhioLINK libraries, OHIONET has identified a number of scanners that would be compatible with this application. Many different makes and models are available with a range of prices and features, in addition to those identified below. If there is a certain make and model that your library would be interested in, let us know and OHIONET will try to find the best price. Prices range from $75.00 to $7,300+ depending on the manufacturer.

Looking for a TWAIN Compatible Document Scanner?
There are a few things to consider when choosing your scanner.

What will you be scanning? Will it ONLY be documents?
If so, you can probably get by with a sheet fed scanner that has an ADF, better known as an Automatic Document Feeder. The ADF will allow you to scan large amounts of paper through the scanner automatically without having to feed them manually.

Will you be scanning 35 mm slides or negatives?
If you plan to scan slides and negatives a flatbed scanner is required, as well as, a transparent materials adapter (TMA). Make sure to choose a scanner with a transparent materials adapter already included with the scanner or as an option if you plan on scanning negatives and slides.

What resolution do you need?
This will depend on how you plan to use your scanned images. Lower resolutions are good for most documents because it keeps the file size small. Higher resolutions are good if you plan to enlarge pictures.

The color accuracy of the scan is determined by Bit Depth.
If you are scanning ONLY documents, a high bit depth isn't usually required. A higher bit depth is best for scanning detailed photographs you will reuse.

Do you think you will scan large books, documents or magazines?
If so, you will need a larger flatbed glass surface. Otherwise, normal size books and magazines can be scanned on 8.5 x 11 scanners.

Do you need the ability to scan both sides of a document automatically?
If so, then you need Duplex capability on your scanner.
