What is Playaway?
Playaway is the market's first self-playing digital audio book. Every Playaway comes pre-loaded
with best-selling content from leading publishers and comes packaged with earphones and a standard AAA battery
to allow for immediate listening.
What is the size of a Playaway and how much content can it hold?
Playaway weighs just two ounces and is about half the size of a deck of cards and holds content
that ranges from 6 to 24 hours play time.
Why can't I add, delete or transfer content on or from a Playaway?
Playaway was designed to protect the copyrighted works of authors and publishers.
In this respect, Playaway is no different from a hard cover book. Customers can share them with
friends just like they would lend their new favorite bestseller, but they can't make copies.
How long does one AAA battery last?
Each Playaway is pre-loaded with a standard AAA battery that should allow for a full 12 hours of
uninterrupted playtime. For longer titles, extra batteries are packaged with the title. When
you replace the battery, the file will never expire.
Can I use another set of headphones with my Playaway?
Absolutely. In addition to the earphones provided, Playaway was designed with a universal
headphone jack in order to allow consumers to enjoy their content using almost any type of
headphones, speakers or mobility accessories available on the market.
How does Playaway compare to audio on cassette or CD?
Playaway is more convenient and easier to enjoy than juggling multiple CDs, cassettes
or a separate player. Playaway also offers various enhanced digital features, including the ability
to control the speed of the narrator's voice and digitally bookmark up to 50 favorite spots.
How does Playaway compare to digital downloads and other forms of on-the-go downloading like cell phones?
Playaway comes pre-loaded with its digital content, so it does not require information transfer
fees, subscriptions, memberships, or even an Internet connection. Just plug-in your headphones
and listen wherever you go.
What does the audio sound like on a Playaway?
Playaway audio is equal to or better than most digital downloads available today. This is due to
proprietary audio processing, production and codecs used to retain fidelity while
compressing the digital audio file size.
What does Playaway cost?
Just like a hardcover book or a current audio book, Playaway prices vary based on the author and
title. Currently pricing for Playaway is comparable to an unabridged CD - with titles beginning at
$30.79 and up for libraries through OHIONET.
Why is library pricing more than commercial pricing for the Playaway?
It's true; commercial pricing is approximately $5.00 less per title. This is because library
packaging typically costs more as it has to be stronger to withstand the circulation process.
Can libraries buy from the commercial pricing program?
Unfortunately, no. Due to publishers and authors copyright issues, libraries will not be
able to purchase from the commercial pricing program.
Is my Playaway covered under any kind of warranty?
Yes, for 180 days from the date of original purchase or ten (10) circulations.
Is my Playaway waterproof?
While the Playaway should not be harmed if it gets splashed, it should not be
used under water.
Who is the company behind the product?

When and how often will new titles come out on Playaway?

How do I turn on my Playaway?
First, make sure you have pulled the small white tab from the battery door. This activates the
standard AAA battery that was pre-loaded into your Playaway unit. Next, press the Playaway
button once to power it on. The Playaway button is the center button on the bottom row, just
beneath the LCD. It has the Playaway logo on it. The unit is now on in a paused state. Now you
can plug in your ear buds - or any other headphones, speakers or adapter. Finally, when you're
ready, press the Playaway button again and the book will begin to play.
How do I replace the battery?
The base of the Playaway has a battery door that can be removed, much like on a common remote
control. Simply snap it off - don't worry, you won't break it. It takes some force. Once it's off
just replace the battery with a standard AAA, and snap the battery cover back in place.
How do I attach the optional lanyard?
At the narrow top of the Playaway unit is a small lanyard clip that slides out of the unit. Simply pull
out with some force and the lanyard clip will snap into place. Then take the lanyard (purchased separately) itself and
loop the thin end through the lanyard clip opening. Once the lanyard is looped through itself, you
can either push the clip back into the unit or leave it up.
How do I add new content to my Playaway?
You can't. Playaway was designed to protect the copyrighted works of authors and publishers.
In this respect, Playaway is no different than a hard cover book; consumers can share them with
friends just like they would lend their new favorite bestseller, but they can't make copies.
Can patrons use Playaway in their car?
Yes, every Playaway has a universal headphone jack that can be used with most of the commonly
available car adapters on the market, including cassette adapters and FM transmitters.
What type of library packaging do you include with Playaway titles?
Each library order includes special protective packaging which includes a professionally
designed graphics insert, non-standard sized VHS-style case, die-cut polyurethane foam
insert, side locking panel, and hand key (one hand key is provided for every ten titles
ordered). This gives the library the option of storing Playaway titles within the library stacks
without worrying about patrons taking units out of the cases. When a patron wishes to check-out a
Playaway title, a librarian simply unlocks the case using the hand key and gives the patron the
entire case. The protective foam insert gives libraries the option of having Playaway titles
returned in a drop-box setting as well.
My library already has security devices. Is there an option for us?
Yes, VHS-style cases that are non-secure can be provided as an alternative to
the secure packaging we typically include. The non-secure case is a standard VHS size
and will also include a professionally designed graphics insert and a die-cut polyurethane
foam insert. This special packaging is included at no additional cost and is a great option
for libraries that already have security devices in stock.
Are accessories included with my Playaway purchase?
Yes, one set of earbuds and one or two AAA batteries (depending on length of title) are included.
You can also purchase additional batteries, earbuds, earbud covers, and additional packaging items from
OHIONET - or you may wish to encourage your patrons to use their own earbuds and/or batteries.
