Document and Imaging Scanners

OHIONET offers many different scanner makes and models in a range of prices and features to support your digitization and/or document deIivery needs.  The prices of these can range from $100.00 to $7,300+ depending your requirements.

A few things to consider when choosing your scanner:

  • What will you be scanning? Will it ONLY be documents?
    If so, you can probably get by with a sheet fed scanner that has an ADF, better known as an Automatic Document Feeder. The ADF will allow you to scan large amounts of paper through the scanner automatically without having to feed them manually.

  • Will you be scanning 35 mm slides or negatives?
    If you plan to scan slides and negatives a flatbed scanner is required, as well as, a transparent materials adapter (TMA). Make sure to choose a scanner with a transparent materials adapter already included with the scanner or as an option if you plan on scanning negatives and slides.

  • What resolution do you need?
    This will depend on how you plan to use your scanned images. Lower resolutions are good for most documents because it keeps the file size small. Higher resolutions are good if you plan to enlarge pictures.

  • What level of color accuracy do you need?
    The color accuracy of the scan is determined by Bit Depth. If you are scanning ONLY documents, a high bit depth isn't usually required. A higher bit depth is best for scanning detailed photographs you will reuse.

  • Do you think you will scan large books, documents or magazines?
    If so, you will need a larger flatbed glass surface. Otherwise, normal size books and magazines can be scanned on 8.5 x 11 scanners.

  • Do you need the ability to scan both sides of a document automatically?
    If so, then you need Duplex capability on your scanner.
