The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five hands-on sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. In this session, we will cover descriptive cataloging. Learn about the principles, rules and tools for bibliographic records that describes the material in hand. We will cover creating entries for author, title, publication information, physical description, series, and other aspects of a complete bibliographic description.

09-02-10 - It's All In the API

With cloud-based applications and software appearing all the time, new ways of interacting with the constant stream of information are appearing. Publicly released APIs (or application programming interfaces) enable end-users to apply this to their local library in many different ways, from the ILS to local needs, via the library's web site. This class will demonstrate several different APIs and give practical, hands-on usage of each.

The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five HANDS-ON sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. In this session, Continuing Resources will be our topic. We will cover special considerations for cataloging integrating resources and serials, including periodicals. We will focus particularly on match points for copy cataloging and title changes by looking at the principles, rules and tools for cataloging.

Designed for the experienced Connexion Client user, or those wanting to further expand their knowledge of the software, this hands-on workshop will explore in greater detail the functionality of the Connexion Client software. Learn how to search more effectively for bibliographic and authority records, save time by customizing features such as user tools and local save files, and use advanced cataloging techniques such as controlling headings and efficiently creating original records.

10-21-10 - OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Basics

In this hands-on workshop, new or current Interlibrary Loan staff will learn the basic elements of using WorldCat Resource Sharing for interlibrary loan through FirstSearch. Topics discussed will include Constant Data, Custom Holdings, and ILL Policies. Please bring your own questions, as this will spur classroom discussion!

10-25-10 - Fundamentals of Cataloging: Subject Analysis

The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five HANDS-ON sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. In this session, we will cover the theories behind the subject heading schemes used by most academic and public libraries and analyze those theories. Participants will learn how important subject headings are when used for organization of and access to materials.

11-08-10 - Fundamentals of Cataloging: Classification

The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five HANDS-ON sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. In this session, we will cover the theories behind the classification schemes (both Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress) used by most academic and public libraries. Participants will learn how these classifications are used for organization and access to materials.

11-18-10 - OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing: Beyond the Basics

This hands-on workshop builds upon the basics of OCLC Resource Sharing by providing details on editing ILL policies and deflection, obtaining and analyzing interlibrary loan data from ILL reports, clear up confusion regarding IFM (Interlibrary loan fee management) and setting up patron-initiated ILL in FirstSearch. Please bring scenarios and questions from your own library, as this helps to spur classroom discussion.

12-06-10 - Fundamentals of Cataloging: AV Materials

The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five HANDS-ON sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. This session will examine the cataloging of audio-visual materials. Participants will be exposed to format-specific cataloging practices for items such as sound recordings and DVDs. Technical services staff will learn the fundamentals necessary for obtaining and editing quality AV records for their library.
