OhioNET News

As we shared in September, OhioNET has been taking care of some exterior repairs, and we wanted to give our members an update.

The contractor has divided the repair work into two phases, and we are pleased to say that the initial phase of repairs is complete. All parking spots under our building are currently available to members and visitors.

We are expecting a second phase of work to begin in late October, and that phase is estimated to last a week or two. As with the first phase, we will continue to work with the contractor to minimize disruption to our visitors, and we will also keep you posted on updates as they become available.

In the midst of any traumatic situation, from addiction to unemployment, sometimes the only thing that sustains people is hope—hope for positive change, hope for different circumstances. But, when times are darkest, they might need to borrow it. Let the library be where they find it. This pair of upcoming webinars, led by Dr. Meghan Harper (Kent State University – School of Information), will discuss aspects of providing trauma-informed service, as well as explore resources on recovery, healing, and resiliency. Subject analysis—or determining the about-ness of an item—is a critical area for library staff members to understand. Subject analysis allows us to collocate related items and helps us foster serendipitous discoveries for our community members. If you work with managing cataloging records, both the in-person workshop and online webinar series will walk you through the steps needed to understand, assess and edit existing subject records.  Choose your preferred format and sign up today!  All subject analysis sessions will be led by Misty Alvaro (Upper Arlington Public Library)

Our series resumes in October with a webinar on seeking permission to use copyrighted material.  Think it’s impossible?  It doesn’t have to be.  Learn the recommended steps you should take to pave the way for a “yes.”

OhioNET stands with its members and the American Library Association in opposing the recent decision by Macmillan to change its ebook lending model.

The ALA initially responded to the change in the ebook lending model in July and asked library members to respond as well. Recently, the ALA has launched a national campaign against the e-book embargo and is soliciting petition signatures not just from libraries and librarians, but also from the public at large. The full text of the petition can be found at eBooksForAll.org.

Some of our members have expressed interest in online learning resource alternatives recently.  We are investigating opportunities for you now, but some of our negotiations are dependent on the breadth of our member interest.  To help us help you, please let us know if your library would be interested in group pricing for any of the following:

You can indicate your interest by emailing us at e-resources@ohionet.org.  Please let us know by Monday, September 16, so that we can leverage your interest into discounts for the whole group.

We are pleased to share that the two scholarship winners for the 2019 conference are Mandi Goodsett (Cleveland State University) and Josh Zeller (Mount St. Joseph University).

The scholarships will cover the cost of registration and up to a two-night stay in Miami University's on-campus hotel, the Marcum. Registration for the conference is open now at https://copyrightconference.lib.miamioh.edu/registration.

OhioNET will be tending to some exterior repairs this fall, and we want to make sure that our members and other guests have the most up-to-date information to make upcoming visit as smooth as possible.

We have accepted a bid to repair the ceiling of the parking area under our unique building. Repairs are anticipated to start the week of September 23, and the contractor has estimated 2-4 weeks for completion.

We will continue to work with the contractor to minimize disruption to our visitors, and we will also keep you posted on updates as they become available.

Going to the OLC Convention and Expo in Cincinnati later this month?

How about the OELMA Conference on October 2-4 in Dublin?

Or maybe the ALAO Conference on October 18 in Columbus?

No matter which one you may attend, OhioNET staff members will be there with you!

We hope you will say hello as you see us presenting, attending sessions, or waiting to chat with you in the exhibit areas.
