Manager, Reference and Research Services

Hours: 
Full-time position, 40 hours per week, normally 8:30 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, but must be flexible if needed to arrive early or stay late. Must work at least one Saturday per month.
Duties: 

Position Overview
The Manager of Reference and Research Services has overall responsibility for the management of the Cincinnati History Library and Archives’ public services and for the supervision of the reference staff. The manager is responsible for the running of the library’s reading room and overseeing the research services provided to the public and staff. The Manager works in close cooperation with the collection curatorial staff. The Manager is a direct report to the AVP for Collections and Preservation.

Responsibilities/Duties:

Reference Services (60%)
• Management of the library reference services and library operations and supervision of the library staff.
• Performance of reference desk duty a minimum of four shifts per week and one Saturday per month.*
• Reference assistance via email, phone, letter, and in-person.*

Public History and Outreach (20%)
• Serve as CMC’s managing editor of the quarterly journal Ohio Valley History.
• Serve as history collections staff coordinator for CMC curator’s blog.
• Performance of library outreach and public programming activities.

Administrative Duties (20%)
• Performance of administrative duties such as reference desk scheduling to cover Monday through Saturday public hours, management of the library budget, compilation of library use statistics, training of new library staff, and special projects and other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
• Work is performed in a typical library environment. Workspace is indoors, with adequate lighting, ventilation, and temperature. Normal office exposure to dust, noise, stress, and disruptions. Normal work place is in the library space in Union Terminal and on occasion at the museum’s Geier Collections and Research Center.

• Must have the mobility to work in an environment that includes sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, and overhead reaching. May sit for extended periods of time in front of a computer or may stand for extended periods of time while working at the reference desk or in the stack area or when presenting a program.

• Must be able to retrieve library materials from shelves as low as floor level to shelves up to 6 ½ feet from the floor (with the aid of a step stool or ladder).

• Must have the vision necessary to read various printed materials and a computer screen.

• Must be able to hear and speak with the public both in person and over the phone.

• Must possess the manual dexterity to use a computer keyboard as well as the ability to handle fragile library materials.

• Must be able to lift 20 to 30 pounds.

Requirements: 

• Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from ALA accredited institution or other relevant advanced degree.
• Minimum five years of experience as professional reference librarian, and three years of experience as a supervisor.
• Good research skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.
• Budget management experience.
• Knowledge of genealogical research practices and resources desired.
• Knowledge of Cincinnati-area regional history desired.

The Cincinnati History Library and Archives at Cincinnati Museum Center houses one of the most significant regional history collections in the United States. The collections contain printed works, audiovisual materials, and manuscripts and archival records. All of the library’s collections are available for use by the public in the reading room facilities located at Museum Center’s location at Cincinnati Union Terminal.

Branch Manager

Duties: 
  • Provide leadership and direction to team regarding all library services
  • Monitor and assess patron and staff needs, evaluating, enhancing, and developing services and programs
  • Perform a variety of supervisory duties
  • Oversee and participate in all public services operations including programming and outreach
  • Responsible for branch budget, as applicable
  • Develop and maintain working relationship with the community, including Liberty Township schools, Liberty Center mall, daycares, preschools, community groups, and organizations
Requirements: 
  • Progressively responsible prior library experience with excellent working knowledge of all library services
  • Prior experience with educational programming for youth audiences is required
  • Bachelors degree required; MLS degree from ALA accredited school highly desired
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience and program coordination experience desired
  • Excellent computer skills including troubleshooting, using the ILS, MS Office, library databases, graphics programs, Google Drive, and the Internet required
  • Must be able to interpret and respond quickly to new or changed responsibilities and/or situations

Duties: 

Under the direction of the Library Board of Trustees, the Fiscal Officer has the following duties: 1.) keeps accurate financial records in accordance with the laws of the state of Ohio; 2.) enters all data accurately into accounting software; 3.) pays all bills approved by the Library Director; 4.) makes payroll, benefits, and retirement system payments; 5.) receives and deposits all library funds in approved depositories; 6.) manages the investment of library funds at the direction of the Board; 7.) prepares the annual budget in cooperation with the Director and the Board; 8.) prepares monthly and annual reports for the Board; 9.) retains all business records of the Library; 10.) prepares fiscal reports at the direction of the Board, or at the request of the Director; 11.) provides guidance, information, and input to the Director and the Board in all fiscal matters; 12.) attends all board meetings; and 13.) performs other related duties as assigned by the Board.

Requirements: 

BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or at least three years of experience maintaining fiscal records for an organization of similar size. Experience with the UAN system is highly desirable. Strong organizational skills essential. Must be able to be bonded and pass a criminal background check.
