Discovering Diverse Reads: Resources for Kids & Teens

Registration is closed for this event

It is crucial for our children to see themselves in the stories they read and to see other people in their community reflected in an honest light. Research has shown that even slightly more exposure to other racial groups, even through children’s books, helps counteract bias and discrimination (Crisp & Turner, 2009) (Krista Aronson, 2014).

Librarians are in a prime position to effect positive change in future generations by incorporating diverse reads into their library’s collection and programs. Though it might feel like a daunting task, this webinar will offer some resources to get you started and make the process easier.

Attendees of this session will have the opportunity to:

  • Walk through examples of classic and fantastic read alikes
  • Explore diverse publishing houses and online resources for discovery
  • Review auditing resources to help evaluate your collection for diversity and community need

Examine ideas for refreshing existing programs to incorporate concepts of diversity and identity
