Intentionally Intersectional: Feminist Programming in the Library


How can librarians be ‘intentionally intersectional’ in the way we program? Intentional intersectionality encourages a purposeful way of looking at institutional systems to make at-risk and historically marginalized community members, especially women, more visible.

In library programming, intentionally intersectional programs are purposefully designed to transform culture so that people are treated equally and with respect.

During this session, we will critically self-reflect on the biases we bring to creating programs and work to dismantle these biases in order to form a meaningful and intentionally intersectional way of thinking about library programming.

Presenter Name Rebecca Stanwick (Toledo-Lucas County Public Library)
Presenter Background

Rebecca is the Assistant Manager of the Fact and Fiction Department at Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Main Library. She is also the Librarian for the Steinem Sisters Collection – TLCPL’s feminist collection that launched in 2018.

The Steinem Sisters Collection explores the lives and achievements of women through the lens of Feminist theory and writings. Created to honor Gloria Steinem in her home town, the collection champions the historical, cultural and political contribution of women; and strives to provide a welcoming space for women of all walks of life to share their truths.

Beyond the library, Rebecca is a PhD Candidate in the Social Theory of Education- History of Education where she studies the informal education of women and feminist community building in 18th and 19th century England.
