Fundamentals of Cataloging--our popular, long-running series of in-person training sessions--is now online!  The first set of sessions in the series explains basic cataloging concepts and processes for copy catalogers and demonstrates how to describe our most numerous resource--books! Each session includes dedicated practice and searching time, brief quizzes, and other learning engagement opportunities.


Session Description:

This first session in the Introduction series will focus on an overview of the key concepts involved in cataloging and resource description. We will be covering the basic tools and vocabulary that you need to get started.  Through this session, attendees will have the opportunity to...

  • learn some basic cataloging vocabulary

  • understand the distinction between descriptive and subject cataloging

  • get to know the variety of tools available to help support your cataloging

  • special attention will be given to freely available cataloging resources



  • No cataloging experience is needed to participate in the Introduction series.
  • Attendees should plan to have 1-2 physical items available at their desks during the session for hands-on practice time.
