Advanced Book Repair and Structure

Description:

Do you have local or unique items in your archives, manuscripts, special collections or local history collection in need of a little TLC?  Join us to learn about a variety of preservation strategies.

Participants will participate in decision-making and product evaluation for rare, brittle, and fragile books, apply stabilizing preservation decisions, and evaluate rehousing and boxing options. Techniques will include pamphlet binding, multiple signature binding, paper repair with wheat starch paste  and Japanese paper, appropriate use of heat set tissue, and encapsulation techniques.

Attendees will receive a supply kit (and list of handy materials) to take back to their institutions.

Presenter Name Dr. Miriam Kahn
Presenter Background

Miriam Kahn has been teaching on library and information science topics for over 20 years, including workshops and courses for the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science.  She also regularly leads programs for practicing library professionals through OhioNET, the state's library consortia and many other library and genealogy groups.



Miriam earned her MLS, specializing in research and reference, from Queens College in New York and also holds both an MA (Hunter College-CUNY) and a Ph.D. (Kent State University) in history.
