Series Description:

Fundamentals of Cataloging--our popular, long-running series of online training sessions, will start off the new year by revisiting the basics.  The first set of sessions in the series explains basic cataloging concepts and processes for copy catalogers and demonstrates how to describe our most numerous resource--books! Each session includes dedicated practice and searching time, brief quizzes, and other learning engagement opportunities. Perfect for anyone who is new to copy cataloging or returning to cataloging responsibilities!

 

Session Description:

This first session in the Introduction series will focus on an overview of the key concepts involved in cataloging and resource description. We will be covering the basic tools and vocabulary that you need to get started.  Through this session, attendees will have the opportunity to...

  • learn some basic cataloging vocabulary
  • understand the distinction between descriptive and subject cataloging
  • get to know the variety of tools available to help support your cataloging
  • special attention will be given to freely available cataloging resources

Presenter Name Misty Alvaro
Presenter Background




Misty Alvaro received her MLIS from Kent State University in 2010 after getting her start in public libraries a few years earlier. Recently, however, Misty served as a cataloger and project coordinator with OSU's Special Collections Description and Access department. Misty has experience cataloging a variety of formats and languages, including Japanese, all Romance languages, and a little German.  In addition to her work with us here at OhioNET, Misty has rejoined the public library landscape with a new gig at Upper Arlington Public Library, where she now serves as the Cataloger Librarian
