Explore the importance of inclusion and belonging in Proactive Planning. This engaging webinar will share why focusing on inclusion and belonging is beneficial and introduce specific actions that staff can take to create an inclusive library environment. This webinar will discuss strategic approaches for implementing equity-centered initiatives that support a sense of belonging for diverse groups, and poverty affected patrons.

  • Discuss the community need and impact of equity-centered initiatives and how library staff can benefit from them

Merv has over ten years working in the nonprofit sector, providing program development to social work and public health programs serving vulnerable populations, such people with severe mental health, veterans, people living with HIV/AIDS, ex-offenders & parolees, LGBTQ+ communities, people experiencing homelessness, people experiencing substance misuse, people experiencing intimate partner violence, and immigrants.

He obtained a joint Master of Clinical Social Work degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and UNC Greensboro. He also holds an advanced certification in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership from UNC Charlotte. Merv is also a member of the academic research team that published, Contextualizing Black Women's Mental Health in the Twenty-First Century: Gendered Racism and Suicide-Related Behavior, which was accepted by the Journal of Racial Health and Ethnic Disparities and featured in Time Magazine. He currently works as a psychotherapist for a private practice in Charlotte, N.C.
