Requirements: 

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent certificate; 300 hours of training in library practices and procedures (or three months of experience); 200 hours of training in use of computer terminal and/or audio-visual equipment (or two months of experience); or equivalent. (May require use of foreign language.)

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese language, East Asian Area Studies/History, or equivalent experience. Familiarity with the Pinyin system of Chinese Romanization. Experience performing cataloging in accordance with established rules and standards. Close attention to detail. Ability to read, write, and speak in English.

 

Duties: 

This position is responsible for cataloging primarily Chinese materials in various formats, using national, international, and The Ohio State University Libraries (OSUL) rules and standards, and for assimilating new rules and practices as they are established.  The Chinese Cataloger evaluates and modifies existing records and creates new records in an international database (OCLC); verifies accuracy of authority files in the online local system and OCLC; creates and/or updates authority records; provides language expertise to support the acquisition of Chinese materials; supports description of e-resources and other formats in Chinese; collaborates with supervisor in setting priorities and solving problems; is responsible for hiring, training, and coordinating the activities and workflows of one or more Chinese cataloging student assistants when needed; attends and participates in workshops, meetings and committees.
