The Pendleton County Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, service oriented Library Director to provide leadership and oversee library operations. The Director has significant operational responsibilities with a very high degree of discretion and limited oversight. He/She is responsible for planning and directing the development, implementation, and management of broad policies, procedures, and complex strategies/activities – including finance, personnel, and planning. He/She makes decisions in circumstances where there are competing interests and multiple solutions, provides professional leadership, advice, and council within the Library and the service area community, and has ultimate responsibility for the work of others and for the success of the Library.

Position Title: Library Director Classification: Director

Makes decisions in circumstances where there are competing interests and multiple solutions. Provides professional leadership, advice, and council within the Library and the service area community. Has ultimate responsibility for the work of others and for the success of the Library.
Overview: Supports the Library’s mission by [1] serving as the chief operating officer of the Library, [2] insuring that customers receive excellent public service, and [3] developing community partnerships.
Immediate Supervisor: Library Board of Trustees
Positions Directly Supervised: All positions in lower classifications
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Organization-Wide Expectations:
Follows established Library and personnel policies, procedures, and work standards
Provides exceptional customer service assisting library patrons, staff, and volunteers pleasantly and professionally
Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
Presents the Library and its services in a positive manner
Regularly monitors library communication venues, including but not limited to employee email, staff bulletin boards, and the intranet
Assists in the use, maintenance, and security of Library building, property, and equipment
Uses the library’s automated system to check materials in/out, process holds and interlibrary loans, register new cardholders, collect fines/fees, answer inquiries, etc.
Performs data entry tasks, including entering library database updates
Shelves library materials and keeps the shelves neat and orderly
Rearranges or shifts books or materials as needed
Assists in keeping the library neat and orderly
Assists in opening and closing routines
Assists in the physical processing and maintenance of library materials
Assists with library displays, including maintaining display areas
Assists with programs, including set up and take down
Assists customers in the use of technology available in the library, including basic troubleshooting of microfilm, photocopier, and computer problems
Provides inquiry, reference, and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons in person, on the telephone, and/or electronically, including Library social media and email accounts, using print and digital resources
Performs related work as required and assigned for the efficient and effective operation of the Library
Job-Specific Expectations:
Works collaboratively with the Library Board and staff, community organizations and institutions, other libraries, government agencies, and the general public to provide high quality library service
Oversees the development and implementation of customer-responsive library services
Proposes, implements, interprets, and communicates the Library’s mission, policies, and procedures
Manages the Library’s personnel including determining need, hiring, training, scheduling, monitoring, motivating, leading and evaluating staff directly or through their supervisor(s), and resolving problems
Develops, recommends, and insures the implementation of library and personnel policies and procedures
Leads the annual budget process, monitors the budget, prepares financial forecasts, pursues grant opportunities
Supervises the payroll and accounting process; ensures the financial integrity of the Library
Initiates and coordinates strategic and short-term planning
Evaluates library services and programs
Oversees collection development, programming planning and implementation, public relations efforts, website development, facilities/grounds maintenance and repair
Represents the Library in the community, and develops and maintains community partnerships that support the Library’s mission
Researches issues, prepares reports, recommends policies
Completes all documents and reports required by KDLA as well as state and local government agencies
Prepares Board agendas and materials for monthly and special board meetings
Works with automation system vendors to set up systems, address issues and resolve problems
Provides support for public service by compiling statistics on library usage, program attendance, etc.
Participates in continuing education activities to develop and maintain an awareness of current library issues and trends
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience:
ALA-accredited MLS preferred or minimum State Requirements and significant relevant library and management experience
High level of comfort with technology
Valid Kentucky driver’s license

Ability to retain knowledge of physical organization of the building and functions of various departments within the Library
Knowledge of online searching and reference services; good research skills

Working knowledge of common computer applications and use of the Internet
Knowledge of current library technology
Knowledge about and/or experience communicating via social media channels
Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on library and office equipment

Employee may need to carry, push, pull or lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to use proper lifting techniques. Push and pull fully loaded (50-100 pounds) carts.
Working Environment: Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. Noise level is usually moderate. Work may be performed in a variety of settings and locations. Possible exposure to dust and other allergens.
Work Schedule: This position requires working scheduled daytime, evening, Saturday, and Sunday hours.

Requirements: ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred and significant relevant library and management experience. High level of comfort with standard office software, including Microsoft Office products, email, and internet usage. Valid Kentucky driver’s license.
Starting salary: based solely on agreement with the Board.
Minimum State Education Requirements
PROFESSIONAL III – Bachelor’s degree with at least 21 graduate or undergraduate college credit hours in library science OR Master’s degree with at least 15 graduate or undergraduate college credit hours in library science.
PROFESSIONAL IV – Bachelor’s degree with at least 9 graduate or undergraduate hours in library science and 6 graduate or undergraduate college credit hours in a job-related field of study OR Master’s degree with 6 graduate or undergraduate college credit hours in library science and 3 graduate or undergraduate college credit hours in a job-related field of study.
