  • Master’s level degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program, Masters of Business Administration or others that apply, preferred.  Other advanced degrees or equivalent experience will be considered.

  • 3-5 years management experiencein areas of budgeting, supervising, event planning, vendor relations, marketing, and advocacy.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in basic and emerging technologies, and willingness to learn and apply new technologies.

  • Effective communication in a variety of mediums and with diverse communities.

SWON Libraries Consortium seeks a talented, dynamic, forward-thinking individual to serve as its next Executive Director.


GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Working with the SWON Executive Board, the Executive Director provides vision and leadership for the SWON Libraries consortium, promoting SWON’s core values of communication, service, community-building, and advocacy for area libraries and library staff. S/he plans, directs, and assesses the services, activities, and resources within the context of SWON Libraries’ mission and strategic plan, and develops and supervises cooperative ventures among the multi-type member libraries. S/he develops and administers the SWON Libraries’ budget (in conjunction with the Finance Committee) and office operations, and plans and coordinates all continuing education and training events for library staff throughout Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Due to the small nature of SWON Libraries, the Executive Director also functions as a practitioner of key elements of daily administrative and clerical tasks.


REPORTING STRUCTURE: Reports to the SWON Executive Board.  







  • Promotes collaborative partnerships with vendors and other organizations throughout the service area, such as the State Library of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and the Ohio Regional Library Systems. Works with the other Regional Library systems to create original programming either in part or for the entire state.  This may include but is not limited to creation of webpage content, recruiting local presenters, creating in-person programming, supporting grant projects with letters of endorsement and commitment of resources.

  • Attends Regional Library Systems’ meetings.

  • Promotes communication among the member institutions and serves as a liaison between groups within SWON Libraries.


  • Works with the Executive Board in administering the operation of SWON Libraries in a collegial and collaborative atmosphere that fosters teamwork and cooperation among the member institutions.

  • Works with the Executive Board to provide vision and leadership for SWON Libraries so that services and collaborations continually evolve and maximize emerging information technologies.

  • Makes recommendations to the Executive Board and Directors Council about policies, planning and the development of services for SWON consortium members.

  • Serves as an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the SWON Executive Board, Finance, Strategic Planning, and/or other Board committees as appropriate.

  • Plans and organizes Executive Board Meetings, reporting on the state of SWON Libraries’ finances, continuing education, and organizational projects.


  • Plans and organizes SWON Libraries Member meetings, facilitating communications with members and seeking member input on significant initiatives.

  • Recruits new members from libraries within the tri-state area, and encourages participation of member libraries in planning and activities.

  • Coordinates assessment of SWON Libraries’ initiatives and services.

  • Maintains and/or creates website content in conjunction with the SWON Libraries staff.  


  • Ensures completion of all administrative and clerical tasks required by the SWON Libraries organization.  

  • Develops with staff all continuing education and training events for SWON Libraries.  

  • Manages the SWON Libraries office and staff. Establishes priorities and implements effective procedures.

  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates staff. Reports personnel actions to the Executive Board as necessary.


  • Seeks grants and other sources of funding outside of traditional state funding to support SWON Libraries’ activities. Advocates at the state level for additional or stable funding.

  • Manages and directs vendor negotiations, project management, SWON Libraries’ infrastructure, and/or relationships with other organizations in the advancement of SWON Libraries mission.  

  • Oversees the finances for SWON Libraries including working in conjunction with the Finance Committee, Accounting firm and Executive Board. Makes sure that SWON Libraries follows Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).  

  • Acts as Fiscal Agent for other Library related entities as required. Fiscal agency includes creating monthly financials statements, bank reconciliation, accounts payable and accounts receivable processing.

  • Creates Quarterly statements for the State Library of Ohio, including financial and activity details from the prior quarter’s activities.
