Requirements: 

  • Either a college degree or at least two years of college completed and combination of relevant experience
  • Experience or education in teaching or training children K-12
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interest in interacting positively with children, teens and adults
  • Knowledge of basic library principles, methods and procedures
  • Maintains professional, businesslike behavior and appearance
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving library patrons and residents of the community
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License, maintain insurability under the library’s insurance and successfully pass a background check

Physical Demands:

    Physical requirements include ability to stand, sit, bend, push and carry library materials over an extended period of time. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  

Duties: 

     The Homework Help Center Coordinator oversees all aspects of the Homework Help Center including homework assistance, volunteers, supplies, and class planning. Responsibilities include building effective relationships with students, parents, volunteers, and teachers, providing one-on-one homework help, and performing all duties of a library associate as needed. The Homework Help Center Coordinator works with each department in the library to provide materials and excellent customer service to the customers. This part-time position is responsible for supporting Main Library’s full-time Homework Help Center Coordinator with volunteer coordination for the library system. Responsibilities include recruiting and orienting volunteers, coordination of training and scheduling volunteers through department staff, and holding volunteers accountable to the library’s mission and vision as needed.

Job Summary:

  • Coordinates volunteers for the Homework Help Center which includes selecting, training and scheduling to ensure the highest quality of service is being offered to students participating in the program
  • Assists students K-12 with homework using textbooks, websites, computers and other resources
  • Reviews homework instructions with students and helps them understand what is being asked
  • Proofreads homework papers, looking for errors and ways for the student to easily improve their assignments. Points out information that is incorrect or missing
  • Promotes the Homework Help Center to area schools, community organizations, and customers through presentations, networking and individual meetings
  • Actively works to build relationships with schools and teachers within service area
  • Mentors and builds relationships with students to assist them in building a foundation for a successful life
  • Orders and maintains supplies for Sycamore Plaza Library Homework Help Center
  • Assists in coordinating annual Summer Reading for children, teens, and adults, with the Main Library Homework Help Center Coordinator and Youth Services and Information Services Departments, and helps with preparations needed for summer events and classes
  • Answers general reference questions and directs customers to the correct area
  • General knowledge of events/classes and resources and services available at the library
  • Coordinates volunteer services for the for the branch by recruiting and orienting new volunteers and working with department staff on training, scheduling and overall management of volunteers
  • General knowledge of the phone system
  • Demonstrates understanding of basic library routines and adheres to library policies and procedures
  • Checks e-mail and stay on top of all relevant organizational and consortium information updates
  • Assists in public service areas as needed
