Description

This session reviews the history and mechanics of copyright law in the United States. Copyright questions are common in libraries and staying up to date with details and current legal requirements is essential. We strongly recommend attending this session as a foundation for the remainder of OhioNet’s copyright series. 

Attendees will discuss what is and isn’t copyrightable (including exceptions!), ownership and duration of copyright, author’s rights, and common infringement pitfalls. 

Attendees of this session will have the opportunity to:  

  • Understand how and why copyright got started 
  • Learn about the basic components and mechanics of copyright 
  • Explore the evolution of current law 
  • Discuss common pitfalls and misunderstanding about copyright

Presenters

Carla Myers Principal Librarian, Coordinator of Scholarly Communication

Carla Myers serves as Principal Librarian, Coordinator of Scholarly Communication for Miami University Libraries. Her professional presentations and publications focus on fair use, copyright in the classroom, and library copyright issues. She has a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Akron and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Kent State University.
