Fundamentals of Cataloging is returning to a popular and complex topic – serials cataloging! If you help manage your library’s journals, magazines, newspapers, or any other periodical resource, attend this series to better understand how and why we catalog them the way we do. This set of online trainings will focus on the issues, fields, and elements needed when copy cataloging periodicals.  

Please note that we will cover both physical and electronic serials records. Each session in the series includes dedicated practice, brief quizzes, and other learning engagement opportunities. 

Session Description

This third session in the Serials series will focus on the key changes that the new cataloging standard, RDA (Resource Description and Access), brings to serials cataloging considerations.  

Through this session, attendees will have the opportunity to… 

  • Understand how RDA changes continuing resource cataloging 
  • Explore additional factors to consider when cataloging electronic serials 
  • Discuss provider-neutral standards for electronic resources 
  • Identify and practice copy cataloging from quality serial records 

Who Should Attend

Individuals who are responsible for maintaining catalog records for periodicals (especially those new to these tasks) and anyone with an interest in the topic.

Sarah Schaff has had the good fortune to work for a handful of Ohio libraries since 2003 – and still loves her work. With a background in philosophy and library science, Sarah currently serves as the Discovery Librarian at Denison, a small liberal arts college east of Columbus. In her 8 to 5 life, Sarah takes care of the invisible systems and online resources that keep the library humming.
