Position Summary

The librarian in this position oversees and provides a variety of services to the Walsh University community. These services include reference duties, research assistance, assessment, and collection development. The Online Services Librarian coordinates access to electronic and print resources and gathers data on library usage to inform renewal and service decisions. Additionally, the librarian in this role serves as lead implementer for updates to OhioLINK electronic resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Hires, schedules, trains, and supervises student employees.
  • Maintains the linking system which provides seamless access to journals through the databases.
  • Maintains the library’s online discovery layer (Search Everything), EBSCO databases, and the e-book collections.
  • Serve as lead librarian in maintaining the library’s Springshare services (i.e. LibAnswer, LibChat, and LibGuides).
  • Maintains the library’s home page.
  • Serves as lead implementer for updates to OhioLINK electronic resources and eResources liaison for all OhioLINK online resources.
  • Library Liaison – Maintains a relationship with faculty in liaison areas, consulting them for purchasing decisions/collection maintenance, and assisting with research. Stays abreast of latest updates in databases for liaison areas and updating liaison area LibGuides
  • Provide reference and research services to students, faculty/staff, and local patrons in person, electronically, and by phone.
  • Instruction - Assist the Instruction and Outreach Librarian with holding instruction sessions in class, online and in the library for residential and adult students in all academic disciplines.
  • Design online information literacy tutorials and modules.
  • Collection Development and Management – Purchase print and e-book titles and deaccession outdated materials in liaison areas based on student and faculty needs.
  • Maintain statistics and reports regarding resource usage to inform renewal decisions.
  • Order library resources, supplies and other requested items cost effectively. These may include books, e-books, streaming media, DVDs and databases. Enter books and audiovisual information into Sierra or other integrated library system upon receipt.
  • Responsible for assessment reporting.
  • Assists students and staff with the use of equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, printers, and related software questions.
  • Other duties and special projects, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

(Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) Must understand and support the Mission, Vision, and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University, as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and possess the following:

Education: Master’s in library science (MLS) or master’s in library and Information Science (MLIS) required from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent degree from a foreign institution at the time of appointment.

Demonstrated knowledge of principles and best practices in information literacy instruction.

Demonstrated knowledge of information resources, collection development and best practices in reference/public service. Demonstrated knowledge of discovery layers and link resolvers.

Work Experience: At least two years’ academic library experience required. Experience with Sierra (Innovative Interfaces Inc.) ILS preferred.

Skills and abilities: Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff, and faculty. Positive attitude a must.
